John Milton

1608 - 1674

Great 17th-century poet writing in English and Latin and blind author of Paradise Lost, the greatest English epic. Also a key civil servant in Oliver Cromwell’s administration following the execution of King Charles the First. (In the illustration by the Swiss painter Henry Fuseli, he dictates to his daughter – probably in more ways than one.)
